《高尔夫球规则》是由苏格兰圣安德鲁斯皇家古老高尔夫球俱乐部及美国高尔夫球协会审定，世界通用的最权威职业和业余选手之行为规范用书。当比赛进行时，每位选手皆负有使比赛公平公正之责任。

　　Definition: Lost Ball
　　A ball is "lost" if: a. It is not found or identified as his by the player within five minutes after the players side or his or their caddies have begun to search for it; or b. The player has made a stroke at a substituted ball; or c. The player has made a stroke at a provisional ball from the place where the original ball is likely to be or from a point nearer the hole than that place. Time spent in playing a wrong ball is not counted in the five-minute period allowed for search.

　　符合下列情况的球为“遗失球”：a. 球员一方或他的或者他们的球童在开始找球的五分钟后没有找到球或不能确定是自己的球时；b. 球员用替换球打了一杆；c. 球员从原始球可能停靠的地点或者比那个地点更接近球洞的地方打了一个临时球。打错球的时间不计入允许打球的五分钟内。
